About This Service

Understanding Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease (CHD) means a problem in the structure of the heart or its blood vessels that is present from birth. It is the most common birth defect, affecting about 8 to 10 of every 1,000 babies. Some defects are minor and close on their own, while others need catheter treatment or surgery.

A thorough evaluation brings together your child's history, a careful physical examination, oxygen saturation, ECG and echocardiography. Dr. Bharath then explains the diagnosis in simple terms and lays out a step-by-step plan — whether that is watchful follow-up, medicines, a catheter procedure or referral for surgery.

Accurate Diagnosis

Every finding is confirmed with echocardiography and, when needed, advanced imaging.

Right Timing

Treatment is planned at the age and size when it is safest and most effective.

Lifelong Follow-Up

Continuity of care through childhood, adolescence and transition to adult services.

Indications

When Is It Recommended?

An evaluation for congenital heart disease is recommended when there is:

  • A heart defect suspected on a fetal scan
  • A murmur heard in a newborn or child
  • Low oxygen saturation on newborn pulse-oximetry screening
  • Breathlessness, sweating during feeds or poor weight gain

Common Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Evaluation of Congenital Heart Diseases.

Will every heart defect need surgery?

+

No. Many small ASDs, VSDs and PDAs close on their own or never cause problems. Several others can be treated through a catheter without open-heart surgery. Surgery is recommended only when it is the best option.

Can my child live a normal life with congenital heart disease?

+

Most children with congenital heart disease, especially after timely treatment, grow up to lead active, healthy lives. Regular follow-up helps detect and manage any issues early.

Why was my child's heart defect not seen during pregnancy?

+

Some defects are small or develop their significance only after birth, when the circulation changes. Routine pregnancy scans are also not designed to detect every heart defect.

Do you coordinate with heart surgeons?

+

Yes. When surgery is needed, Dr. Bharath works closely with pediatric cardiac surgeons to plan the timing and approach, and continues follow-up after the operation.

Is congenital heart disease caused by something I did during pregnancy?

+

In most cases, no. The cause is usually unknown and is not related to anything the parents did. Some conditions are linked to genetics, maternal diabetes or certain medicines, which Dr. Bharath can discuss with you.

Will my other children or future babies have a heart defect?

+

The risk is slightly higher than in the general population but remains low for most families. A fetal echo is recommended in future pregnancies for reassurance and early detection.
